World Children's Day - Making progress for our kids

PM opens playground on parliament grounds

Today, World Children’s Day, is also the 30th anniversary of the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history – the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC).

The Government took the opportunity to recommit to the Convention, which enshrines in international law specific rights for children to have safe, happy and fulfilled childhoods.

The announcement was made at the official opening of a playground on Parliament lawn, attended by children from early learning centres around Wellington.

The day also provides an opportunity to reflect on what's been achieved so far, and a reminder of what we need to continue to focus on here in New Zealand.
